On December 13, NIA at PS 204 presented a "Season of Joy" to hundreds of parents and well-wishers. Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa were all celebrated with song, dance, poetry, and art work. Program Director Kathy D'Antuono noted that the staff, children, and parents all help make their "program one NIA can be very proud of."

On November 8 (Young Readers Day), twelve members of NIA/PS 186's ExpandED Learning team volunteered their time for Literacy Pajama Night. Students, their families, and staff all enjoyed snacks, crafts, a movie, and story time. All activities were structured around the theme of "The Magic School Bus: On the Ocean Floor."

Formed to highlight the importance of after-school programming for America's children, families and communities, NIA has celebrated Lights On After-School since 1999. Nationwide, children show off the after-school skills they've learned to illustrate the need for this valuable programming.

On September 22, NIA celebrated its 30th birthday with a gala dinner party at Gargiulo's Restaurant in Coney Island. Honorees at the event included NIA Founder and current President Michael A. Bové who received this year's Man of the Year award.

NIA's Out-of-School Time summer camp program at PS 229 was hotter than the 4th of July. Nearly 200 children enjoyed educational and recreational activities including sports and fitness, music, literacy, dance, architecture, science and much more over a seven-week period.

In February, educators and after-school professionals from Oslo, Norway came to visit NIA/One World's Expanded Learning Time program at P.S. 186. Apparently, they liked what they saw because the group returned with elected officials from Oslo's City Council in tow.

In partnership with NIA, P.S. 503, led by its principal Bernadette Fitzgerald, held a field day on June 3 at Red Hook Park. Cheerleaders greeted their fellow students as they arrived at the park, beginning a fun-filled day of physical activity and nutrition education.

NIA Community Services Network, in partnership with Maimonides Medical Center, hosted a cardiac symposium on the 12th of May. More than 250 community members assembled at the Bay Ridge Manor to learn about healthy hearts from an all-star trio of accomplished cardiologists..

NIA held its second annual auction on April 8. More than 300 community members assembled at the festively decorated Regina Center to enjoy one another's company, support NIA initiatives, and of course, win one or more of the 250 prizes.

PS 186/NIA One World program and New Utrecht High School's Asian Club celebrated the Chinese New Year with moving performances at PS 186. The Asian Club mesmerized the crowd with a traditional lion dance.

The Coca-Cola Foundation awarded NIA a $25,000 Active Healthy Living Grant. Teaming with PS 503, NIA's Health/Exercise Lifestyle Plan (HELP) aims to instill healthy behaviors, including physical activity and smart nutritional choices.
