NIA ended the year with the annual Christmas Celebration attended by hundreds of proud parents and friends of students of NIA after-school programs. Attendees were treated to a number of performances from NIA's students. In a startling move, Santa Claus took time out from his extremely busy schedule to spend some time with the children.

Our Fourteenth Annual Community Recognition Awards dinner was held on October 4th at Gargiulo's Restaurant. Honorary Dinner Chairman Harry Nespoli (President of Local 831, Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association, International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Municipal Labor Committee) joined with NIA to recognize the outstanding achievements of local leaders.

NIA hosted three picnics for Brooklyn seniors this past month on the beautiful grounds of the U.S. Army Garrison at Ft. Hamilton. The annual outings provide our golden-agers with much-needed opportunities to socialize.

Approximately 180 rising first through sixth graders took part in NIA's Out-of-School-Time Summer Day Camp at PS 229 this year. Arts & crafts, character education, fabric arts, science, and physical activities were all on the menu.

NIA's OST program at IS 281 held its annual fundraiser for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation on June 12th and 13th. The middle-schoolers turned lemons into $385 worth of donations to the organization that works to fight childhood cancer.

NIA held three rallies to protest proposed cuts to Out-of-School-Time (OST) programs on May 9. Hundreds of representatives from NIA after-school programs at PS 186, PS 229, IS 227, IS 281, PS 204, PS 52 (SI), PS/IS 95, and PS/IS 104, including students, parents, and educators, joined with NIA staff, community leaders, and elected officials.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, NIA Advantage After-School at PS 204 Director Kathy D'Antuono organized an April event that brought together speakers from HeartShare Human Services, as well as a school psychologist, a teacher, and a parent of an autistic child.

When Seattle Public Schools wanted to learn about ExpandEd Schools they reached out to NIA . As a result, a contingent of teachers, principals, and administrators visited NIA/PS 186's ExpandED program.

NIA held its annual holiday event for family and friends on December 15, 2011 at Regina Center. Taking time out from his busy schedule, Santa Claus greeted the many children on hand with gifts and more than a few "Ho, ho, ho's."
