NIA Community Services Network held its annual Community Holiday Celebration on December 12, 2013 at Regina Center in Dyker Heights.

 

Hosted by NIA President Michael A. Bové, CEO Mary Anne Cino, Executive Director Rosa Casella, Director of Program Operations Annette Scaduto, and the Board of Directors, the celebration brought together more than 500 children, families, and community members for a program designed to showcase some of the talent in its after-school arts programs. These included art work and dance performances by groups from NIA's after-school programs at PS 186, PS 247, PS 229, PS 176, IS 227, and IS 281.

In what is now an annual tradition, the extended family of students, parents, and staff of NIA's after-school program at IS 227 got together before the holidays to break bread and enjoy one another's company. The group clearly has quite a lot to be thankful for!

NIA held its 15th Annual Community Recognition Awards Dinner on October 3, 2013 at Gargiulo's Restaurant in Coney Island. Evening highlights included a rousing rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" by NIA Program Directors Shanelle Jenkins and Jibrail Nor, and honors presented to the outstanding leaders of our community.

To help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research, Team NIA, captained by Community Liaison Senja Frangipani (c.), put on their walking shoes last September 22. The intrepid troopers have raised a grand total of $1,175!

August 6 was National Night Out, an annual summer event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches, in which precincts organize anti-crime rallies with the participation of local businesses and civic organizations. NIA was out in force at several NYPD precincts throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island, manning information tables to let folks know about our many services, including our post-Sandy recovery efforts.

NIA's Leadership Team and Board of Directors feted their staff at Gargiulo's Restaurant on June 19th. The event, which also allowed the staff to share their programs with their peers at our various sites, was a huge success.

The children in NIA/PS 186's ExpandED® program staged performances of Disney's Cinderella Kids this month. Trisha Arnold served as the director of the rags-to-riches musical, along with musical director Adrian Rosas and choreographer Christine A. Marty.

NIA held its fourth annual auction on Friday, April 12, 2013. The Regina Center was transformed into a rootin' tootin' Western town through festive decorations that were created by local students and NIA's staff.

The Great White Way came to Brooklyn as IS 281 staged "A Night on Broadway." Directed and choreographed by NIA Activity Specialist and IS 281 Dance Teacher Julie Rubin, The Cavallaro Dance Classes, The NIA/IS 281 Dance Crew, and The NIA/IS 281 Cheerleaders all tripped the light fantastic, performing scintillating show-stoppers.

Students in NIA's after-school program at PS 264 have been studying the paintings of both Wassily Kandinsky and the dragons associated with the Chinese New Year. You can see their interpretation of Kandinsky's colorful, abstract paintings by clicking on the photo above.

NIA held its fourth annual open house on January 3, 2013. NIA's staff welcomed community leaders, public officials, educators, after-school and community partners, and friends into our offices.

Additionally, NIA welcomed its newest school partner, PS 179, into its roster of schools that provide youth programming.
