November 2014Students who have an interest in basketball at NIA/PS-IS 121 were participants in DYCD’s Fall Skills Fest Clinics. Under the “Designed to Move” model created by Nike, the clinics provided participants with basketball development and training opportunities.

NIA Community Services Network held its 16th Annual Community Recognition Awards Dinner at Gargiulo's Restaurant in Coney Island on October 30th. Honorary Chairperson Harry Nespoli, as well as NIA Board of Directors and administrative staff were on hand to preside over the ceremonies.

September 2014As it does every September, NIA held a series of three picnics for Brooklyn seniors on the idyllic grounds of the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton. The open-air accommodations and lunches help create much-needed opportunities for the golden-agers to socialize.

August 2014New York City’s new Comprehensive After School System (COMPASS) integrates Out-of-School Time (OST) with an unprecedented middle school expansion called SONYC (for School’s Out New York City). In the wake of these new developments, another exciting school year has begun and everyone at NIA has been quite busy at our 25 sites throughout Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens.

NIA summer camps are up and running! Children spend time being immersed in active play and experiential learning opportunites. Summer camp allows children the opportunity to learn new skills, form wonderful relationships with their peers and learn more about themselves.

June 2014At the end of every school year, students in NIA after-school programs treat their family and friends to an array of performances to culminate what they learned during the year. This year's cultural display included ballet, West African djembe drumming, art displays, a tribute to Michael Jackson, and a carnival.

May 2014NIA programs were busy during the month of May. High schoolers from New Utrecht HS interned at PS 247K; PS 186/NIA ExpandED Photography Group showed off their creations; butterflies were set free by the students at NIA’s PS 30K program; the NIA Knights of IS 281K made it to their second Inter-parish Basketball League (IBL) Championship  game; the Mighty Milers of NIA at IS 281K shattered their running totals from last year; and so much more!

NIA held its fifth annual auction on Friday, April 4, transforming The Regina Center into a ’70s era discotheque, complete with mirrored balls, platform shoes, and tons of great music. The team-building, fund-raising event brought families, educators, business leaders, elected officials, and community members together to enjoy one another's company and to support NIA's many programs.

The Broadway veterans of PS 186/NIA ExpandED rose to new heights in their latest production, Annie KIDS. The result of a true community effort, the students shone in their staging of the famous musical, with plenty of help from behind the scenes. Families provided emotional support everyday and volunteered their time and talents on “Annie Community Day.”

 

The show was produced by PS 186 Assistant Principal Donna Neglia. The ExpandED team led the cast and crew, specifically Felicia Balzomo, who directed. The choreography was provided by Christine Marty. Christina Grigoli was the set designer. Stephen Neglia volunteered his time and talents to build the magnificent sets.

NIA, in partnership with Founding Principal Lashawnna Harris and her PS 330 team, is delighted to announce the opening of its first program in the Queen's borough on February 10. NIA’s program in Corona offers homework help, instruction in visual and performing arts, and physical education activities.

NIA Community Services Network hosted its annual Open House on January 8 at their office. NIA President Michael A. Bové, CEO Mary Anne Cino, Vice President Jerry Saporito, Treasurer Joseph Iervasi, Board Members Mario Costantino and Ida D'Amelio, and Executive Director Rosa Casella greeted more than 150 people who were on hand to celebrate the beginning of the New Year.
