NIA Celebrates the 22nd Annual Lights On Afterschool

PS 104 Lights On Afterschool

On October 28, 2021, NIA celebrated the 22nd Annual Lights On Afterschool with over 5,000 students throughout our 40+ programs. This event, established by Afterschool Alliance, is held annually and is the only nationwide rally celebrating afterschool and the integral role these programs play in the lives of children, families, and communities. Lights On Afterschool is also a day to advocate for more afterschool programs, as there are nearly 25 million children who are currently unable to access them.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lights On Afterschool has been especially important as a way to highlight community-based organizations, like NIA, that have been innovating and adapting to stay connected with students and keep them safe, healthy, supported, and engaged in learning. Despite challenges created by the pandemic, according to the 2020 America After 3pm report, 94% of parents in New York are satisfied with their child’s overall afterschool program experience.

I like NIA because it’s a place where I can be myself. I love to dance and they always support me. The trips are also always fun and I have a good time.

Check out all the NIA celebrations below and if you have a moment, please take action here by sharing a message with Congress about the impact afterschool programs like ours have on your family and community!

We hope you’ll join us for next year's Lights On Afterschool on Thursday, October 20, 2022!
